What the agencies state on their own pages
Every row was read on the employer's site in October 2026. Most of these brands are franchises, so the office near you sets pay and may add requirements.

Companion and personal care roles are open to beginners, roles that need a state credential are not, and paid training is decided office by office. Which title needs which training is in HHA vs PCA vs CNA.
What the job is
Visiting Angels lists the common duties: help with activities of daily living, companionship, personal care such as bathing, grooming, dressing and toileting, laundry and light housekeeping, meal preparation, and medication reminders; it states that evenings, weekends and overnight shifts are available (visitingangels.com, October 2026). Home Instead adds Alzheimer's care and transportation (homeinstead.com, October 2026). Part-time openings in all fields are in part-time jobs near me.
The checks you will pass
These are general rules; the exact screening comes from your state and the agency.
- Background check and drug screen. Visiting Angels lists "Pass a drug screening and background check" as a hiring step, and Home Instead lists passing a drug and background check as a qualification (both October 2026). Some states run fingerprint checks; Florida requires a Level II screening for certified nursing assistants (Florida Board of Nursing, October 2026).
- Identity and work eligibility. Agencies verify both. Honor states that it participates in E-Verify (honorcare.com, October 2026).
- State registries. A nursing home may not let you work as a nurse aide until it receives registry verification (42 CFR 483.35(d)(4)). Medicaid personal care requires an aide "qualified to provide such services" under state rules (42 CFR 440.167), and an agency's personal care aide must meet "all qualification standards established by the state" (42 CFR 484.80(i)). Check your state nurse aide registry and your state Medicaid agency's personal care rules.
- A driver's license. Home Instead lists one as a qualification (homeinstead.com, October 2026). Many clients need rides, so offices often ask for a license and a car.
What it pays
Home health and personal care aides earned a national median of $17.21 an hour in May 2025, with the 10th percentile at $13.00 and the 90th at $21.65 (BLS OEWS).

Every state is in home health aide pay by state. Employers that state weekly pay, including Honor, are in jobs with weekly pay. BLS projects 18 percent growth for these jobs from 2025 to 2035 and about 760,500 openings a year (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, August 27, 2026).
The 30-day plan
Days 1 to 7: pick the lane and get the papers ready. Decide between a companion or personal care role, which starts fastest, and a nurse aide track, which pays more but needs a class and a state exam. Gather documents that prove identity and the right to work; Home Instead's Wilmington office lists exactly those two items on its application (homeinstead.com, October 2026). Look up your state nurse aide registry and your state Medicaid personal care rules. Write a one-page resume that lists any unpaid care you have given to family; the format is in resume template.
Days 8 to 14: apply to three to five offices. Use the ZIP code search on each agency's site; Visiting Angels and Home Instead both route you to the local office. Expect an interview about your education, work history, the roles you want and your availability (visitingangels.com, October 2026). Say yes to evenings or weekends if you can. Submit to the background check and drug screen the same week. Other employers hiring beginners now are in entry-level jobs hiring now and best jobs with no experience.
Days 15 to 21: orientation and training. Honor states paid orientation and training; Visiting Angels says many locations pay for training; Home Instead's Tri-Cities office states paid training (all October 2026). Ask on day one whether training hours are paid and whether a state certificate is included; BrightStar Care says local agencies can help you get one where the state requires it (careers.brightstarcare.com, October 2026). Tell the office what you are comfortable with; Visiting Angels matches clients to caregivers by availability, experience and personality (visitingangels.com, October 2026).
Days 22 to 30: first shifts and the next step. Work the first visits, keep your own log of hours, and confirm your first pay date. Then book the next credential. Nursing homes may not charge employees for nurse aide training, and the state must reimburse a self-paid class if a facility hires you within 12 months (42 CFR 483.152(c)); the programs are in free CNA training. If you would rather work in a clinic, see medical assistant jobs without certification.

How to verify a listing
Every opening on JobPin links to its source posting. Open it, check the date, and confirm the office address on the brand's own locator before you share personal details. Franchise offices set their own pay, so compare the posted rate with the metro figures above. No legitimate agency charges a fee to apply or for its own orientation, and none hires by text message before you apply. If a listing asks you to pay for a "certificate" before the interview, check your state nurse aide registry's approved program list first.
