EPA Section 608: the one card almost everyone needs
Section 608 of the Clean Air Act bars anyone from "intentionally venting" refrigerants while servicing or disposing of air conditioning or refrigeration equipment (epa.gov, Section 608 page, updated September 3, 2026). EPA requires certification for "technicians who maintain, service, repair, or dispose of equipment that could release refrigerants." A technician is anyone who attaches or detaches gauges, or adds or removes refrigerant.
The four certification types (epa.gov, Section 608 technician certification requirements, updated July 15, 2026):

| Type | Covers |
|---|---|
| Type I | Small appliances |
| Type II | High- or very high-pressure appliances, except small appliances and motor vehicle air conditioning |
| Type III | Low-pressure appliances |
| Universal | All of the above |
Key facts from the same page: the test must be given by an EPA-approved certifying organization; the core test for Universal certification must be proctored; and "Section 608 Technician Certification credentials do not expire." Apprentices "are exempt from certification requirements provided they are closely and continually supervised" by a certified technician. BLS adds that the exam "is typically included as part of completing a postsecondary HVACR program," and that "some states and localities require HVAC technicians to be licensed" (BLS OOH, August 27, 2026).

Trane says its program requires "no prior experience or training" and had "over 80 apprentices in 26 states" in its second cohort (Trane Technologies release, August 22, 2023). Carrier's TechVantage career guide lists "on-job training (registered apprenticeship)" and an "HVAC certificate program (6-12 months)" as entry routes, and names "HVAC Apprentice" and "HVAC Installer Helper" as starting titles (carrier.com, read October 2026).
Apprenticeship versus school: cost
A registered apprenticeship must pay "a progressively increasing schedule of wages" from day one (29 CFR 29.5). The UA says its apprentices build a future "with no student debt" (ua.org). The two large for-profit chains we checked do not state a price on their HVAC program pages: Lincoln Tech's Grand Prairie diploma runs "approximately 52 weeks" and 1,200 instructional hours (lincolntech.edu, read October 2026), and UTI's HVACR program runs "9-10 months" (uti.edu, read October 2026). If you choose a school, get the total cost in writing and ask whether the EPA 608 exam is included. Electrical apprenticeships work the same way: electrician apprenticeship.
What HVAC technicians earn by metro

Hourly figures below are from BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2025. The 10th percentile is near apprentice and helper pay.

What employers look for
BLS lists the qualities employers want: customer-service skills, because technicians "often work in customers' homes or business offices, so they must be friendly, polite, and punctual"; problem-solving; math; mechanical skills; and physical stamina and strength (BLS OOH, August 27, 2026). Service Experts asks for a diploma or GED and a driver's license (serviceexperts.com). Carrier's entry tier asks for "a high school diploma or equivalent and no experience" (carrier.com).
How to start this month
- Pick a path from the table. Search apprenticeship.gov's Job Finder by "HVAC" and your city; it tags postings as "Registered Occupation" or "Registered Partner" (apprenticeship.gov, read October 2026).
- Apply to employer programs directly: Trane, Lennox NAS, Service Experts and ARS list openings on their own career sites.
- Get EPA 608 Type I or Universal early. The credential never expires (epa.gov).
- If nothing opens, start as an installer helper or laborer and reapply. See construction laborer: your first job and general labor entry points.
Current openings
See general labor jobs for helper and installer-helper roles, or by city: Phoenix, Denver. More jobs above $20 an hour: jobs that pay $20 an hour with no degree.

How to verify a listing
Every opening on JobPin links to its source posting. A real apprenticeship is registered with the Department of Labor or a state agency; search it on apprenticeship.gov. Employer programs above are confirmed on the companies' own pages. No employer charges for training that it calls paid, and EPA 608 tests are given only by EPA-approved certifying organizations.
