First, the law
The Fair Labor Standards Act "does not require extra pay for night work." Extra pay for night shifts "is a matter of agreement between the employer and the employee" or the employee's representative (U.S. Department of Labor, Night Work and Shift Work page, viewed October 21, 2026). The same law does require overtime pay for hours over 40 in a workweek for covered hourly workers.
What that means for you: if the posting does not state a differential, do not count on one. Ask before you accept, and get the number in writing. A premium that is only "discussed at interview" is not a promise.

| Employer | Overnight schedule in postings | What the posting says about night pay | Base pay in posting | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Walmart eCommerce warehouses | 5:00 PM to 3:00 AM, Monday to Thursday (Lithia Springs, GA). 5:30 PM to 3:30 AM, Monday to Thursday (Tampa, FL). A separate "Fri-Sun Nights" listing at Lithia Springs | "Premiums may be paid in amounts ranging from $0.35 per hour to $3.00 per hour in specific circumstances," based on schedule, facility, season or work; more than one can apply | Freight handler: $22.00 to $25.50 (Lithia Springs); $20.35 to $23.85 and $20.95 to $24.45 (Tampa); $22.20 to $25.70 (Fort Worth, TX); $24.40 to $27.90 (Perris, CA) | Walmart postings R-1797185 and R-1251534 and careers search |
| Walmart dairy plant | 10:30 PM to 7:00 AM, Monday to Friday (Valdosta, GA) | No premium amount in the listing | Material handler: $21.90 to $27.40 | Walmart careers search |
| Target supply chain | 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM, Sunday, Monday and Saturday; 4:00 PM to 2:00 AM, Tuesday to Friday (Fridley, MN) | "Shift differential, ranging from $2.00 to $3.50 per hour, based on eligibility" | Warehouse associate $23.35 to $26.35; warehouse worker $24.90 to $31.30 | Target posting T0551 |
| Amazon | Shift times appear when you pick a shift in the application | Some sortation listings carry a "Premium Pay" tag; the amount is not shown on the listing | Up to $24.25 (Lewisberry, PA) and up to $24.00 (Waukegan, IL), both tagged "Premium Pay" | hiring.amazon.com job search |
| UPS | Night about 11:00 PM to 3:00 AM; preload about 3:00 to 9:00 AM; twilight about 5:00 to 10:00 PM; times vary by location | The posting lists one base pay | $21.00 (seasonal package handler, Winchester, VA) | jobs-ups.com Warehouse Workers page and posting |
| FedEx | Early morning, midday, evening and overnight part-time shifts (Hagerstown, MD) | The posting lists one range for all part-time shifts | $21.75 to $22.75 part time (Hagerstown, MD); $18.25 (Irving, TX) | FedEx postings P25-95151-21 and P25-95427-80 |
Two patterns stand out. Walmart and Target write the premium into the posting as a dollar range. The UPS and FedEx postings we read list one rate and let the shift window decide whether you want it. Amazon sits in between: its FAQ says you can make more "based on your location and the shift you choose," and some listings carry a "Premium Pay" tag (Amazon, viewed October 21, 2026).
Typical overnight schedules
- Four 10-hour nights. Walmart's weekday evening and overnight blocks (5:00 PM to 3:00 AM at Lithia Springs, 5:30 PM to 3:30 AM at Tampa, Monday to Thursday) and Target's Tuesday to Friday block (4:00 PM to 2:00 AM at Fridley) all run four nights, then three days off.
- Three 12-hour nights. Target's Fridley posting, labeled full time, lists 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM on Sunday, Monday and Saturday (viewed October 21, 2026).
- Plant overnights. Walmart's Valdosta dairy plant lists 10:30 PM to 7:00 AM, Monday to Friday.
- Short sorts. UPS lists a night sort of about 11:00 PM to 3:00 AM and a preload of about 3:00 to 9:00 AM. FedEx part-timers generally work 3 to 6 hours a day. These part-time jobs fit around a day job or school.
- Flex and part time at Amazon. Amazon's Flex Time band is 0 to 19 hours a week and Part Time is 20 to 29 (Amazon benefits page, viewed October 21, 2026). An Amazon fulfillment center posting lists overnight, early morning, day, evening and weekend shifts (JOB-220096304, viewed October 21, 2026).
Weekly pay on these shifts: Amazon says hourly associates are paid every Friday, and UPS and FedEx postings state weekly pay (viewed October 21, 2026). Compare employers in jobs with weekly pay and browse warehouse jobs with weekly pay.
How much the differential is worth
Take a 40-hour week and simple math:
- $1.00 an hour more is $40 a week, about $2,080 a year.
- $2.00 an hour more is $80 a week, about $4,160 a year.
- $3.00 an hour more is $120 a week, about $6,240 a year.
Those are before taxes and only at full hours. Against the national median for hand laborers and material movers, $19.35 an hour (BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2025), a $2.00 premium is a raise of about 10%. On a 4-hour night sort, a $1.00 premium would be $20 a week, so the base rate matters more there. More benchmarks: pay benchmarks.

Health and routine, kept short
Night work pushes against your body clock. OSHA says evening, night, rotating and other irregular shifts "may cause worker fatigue," and that long work hours may increase the risk of injuries and accidents (OSHA, Worker Fatigue page, viewed October 21, 2026). NIOSH's shift-work training gives practical steps (NIOSH Module 9, last reviewed March 31, 2020):
- Sleep as soon as you get home. NIOSH: "The more sleep you get before 2 p.m., the better rested you will be." Do chores and errands later, not in the morning.
- Make the room dark and quiet. Blackout shades or an eye mask, and earplugs or a white noise machine.
- Keep some sleep hours the same every day. On days off, NIOSH suggests staying up until about 3 or 4 AM and sleeping until noon or 1 PM, so your body always has some hours of sleep in common.
- Nap before the shift if you can. NIOSH says it adds to total sleep and helps you stay alert at night.
- Block morning light. NIOSH suggests blue-light-blocking or very dark sunglasses from the time you leave work until you are in the dark at home.
- Do not drive very sleepy. NIOSH: "If you are very sleepy, do not drive." A ride or transit is safer.
- Do not stay up all day before your first night shift or after your last one. NIOSH warns that you will be awake too many hours, which raises the risk of accidents and injuries.
