The two weight lines that decide the rules

26,001 pounds: the CDL line. A single vehicle rated 26,001 pounds or more needs a Class B CDL; a combination rated 26,001 or more with a towed unit over 10,000 pounds needs Class A (49 CFR 383.91). A 26-foot box truck is usually rated below that line, which is why Amazon XL and many moving and furniture jobs do not need a CDL. The rating is on the door jamb plate; the truck's length does not decide it.

10,001 pounds: the medical card and age line. Federal rules define a commercial motor vehicle in interstate commerce as one rated 10,001 pounds or more, or any vehicle built for 9 or more passengers for pay or 16 or more without pay (49 CFR 390.5). Drivers of those vehicles must be 21 and hold a medical examiner's certificate even with no CDL (49 CFR 391.11 and 391.41), and the federal hours-of-service rules apply. Many box trucks and larger vans sit above this line. That is why non-CDL postings often still ask for a DOT physical.

Below 10,001 pounds and inside one state, federal driver rules mostly do not apply. Employers still set their own: Amazon DSP and Amazon Flex both require age 21, and insurers often drive that rule.

What the jobs are like

  • Package delivery (DSP, FedEx Ground, UPS). Route work with 150 to 300 stops a day in peak season, scanners, and fixed start times. Physical: lifting and stairs all day. Pay is hourly with overtime at many DSPs, and FedEx and Amazon postings state weekly pay; see jobs with weekly pay. The employer is the contractor, so pay and schedules differ from station to station.
  • Box truck and moving. Furniture, appliances, freight between stores and warehouses. Often two-person crews. Requires the medical card when the truck is rated over 10,000 pounds.
  • Route sales. Bread, snacks, beverages, uniforms. Part driver, part merchandiser. Pay can include commission.
  • Shuttle and chauffeur. Hotels, airports, car dealerships, senior living. Steady hours, lower pay, often part time.
  • Gig delivery (Amazon Flex, app platforms). You use your own car and pay for fuel, maintenance and insurance from the rate. Amazon states $18 to $25 an hour before those costs. Treat the posted rate as gross.

When a CDL is worth it

The national median for heavy and tractor-trailer drivers was $28.19 an hour in May 2025, against $21.57 for light truck drivers (BLS). Several carriers cover the cost of CDL school and pay during training: paid CDL training. The steps and timeline: how to get a CDL. What the CDL jobs look like: local vs regional vs OTR trucking. Since March 16, 2026, non-domiciled CDLs are limited to H-2A, H-2B and E-2 holders; non-CDL driving is the practical route for drivers outside those categories: the non-domiciled CDL rule.

How to verify a listing

Every opening on JobPin links to its source posting. For DSP and FedEx Ground jobs, the employer named on the posting is a contractor; check that name, not just the brand. Amazon Flex, UPS, USPS and FedEx never charge a fee to apply. Postings that ask you to buy a vehicle, uniform or "starter kit" before you are hired are scams.

FAQ

Do you need a CDL to drive a 26-foot box truck?

Not if the truck is rated under 26,001 pounds, which most 26-foot box trucks are (49 CFR 383.91). If it is rated 10,001 pounds or more and crosses state lines, you need to be 21 and hold a DOT medical card.

How much do Amazon DSP drivers make?

$20 to $24.50 an hour in October 2026 postings, with overtime at many contractors. Box truck (XL) roles posted at $22.25 an hour. Pay is set by each Delivery Service Partner.

How much does Amazon Flex pay?

Amazon's site says most drivers earn $18 to $25 an hour, before fuel and vehicle costs, and that earnings vary by location, tips and delivery time (flex.amazon.com, October 2026).

Do non-CDL driver jobs require a DOT physical?

Yes when the vehicle is rated 10,001 pounds or more in interstate commerce (49 CFR 390.5 and 391.41). Many employers require it for all drivers anyway.

What is the age requirement for delivery driver jobs?

Federal rules require 21 for commercial vehicles over 10,000 pounds in interstate commerce. Amazon DSP, Amazon Flex and most FedEx Ground contractors require 21 for every driver.

What do light truck drivers earn?

A national median of $21.57 an hour in May 2025; $21.18 in Dallas-Fort Worth and $21.12 in Houston (BLS OEWS).

Is a non-CDL driving job a path to a CDL?

Yes. Experience with routes, scanners and a medical card helps, and several carriers pay for CDL school. See paid CDL training.
