What Customer Service Work Is Really Like: Call Metrics, Screen Time, and What You Take Home

Customer service reps answer calls and chats, fix account problems and take complaints, often timed and monitored. The national median is $21.53 an hour (BLS, May 2025). Starting pay is often lower. At $17 and 40 hours, expect about $588 a week after federal taxes. Last reviewed October 31, 2026.

A real day

This comes from the O*NET task list for customer service representatives (43-4051.00), read October 31, 2026.

  • Log in on time. Your systems need to be up when your shift starts, because that time is measured.
  • One contact after another. You talk to a customer, pull up the account, explain a charge, take an order, or cancel a service.
  • Type while you listen. You record each contact and what you did about it. You check that the fix actually went through.
  • Complaints. You resolve billing and service complaints by refunding money or adjusting bills, and refer what you cannot fix.
  • The parts people dislike. The same few problems all day. Selling: "solicit sales of new or additional services" is on the O*NET list. Being recorded. Taking the blame for a policy you did not write.

The numbers that run your day

BLS says representatives "may be under pressure to answer a designated number of calls while supervisors monitor them for quality assurance" (BLS OOH, read October 31, 2026). A CVS Health remote posting read October 31, 2026, names the measures behind that: Average Handle Time, Unavailable Time, Quality Metrics and Schedule Adherence (R1055334, read October 31, 2026).

Scroll horizontally to view every column.

Measure In plain words What it does to your day
Average handle time How long each contact takes you You feel the clock even when a caller needs more help
Unavailable time Time you are logged in but not taking contacts You watch your own minutes away from the queue
Quality Someone reviews your calls and notes Your wording and accuracy are scored
Schedule adherence CVS defines it as keeping your arrival and departure times and assigned lunch and break times Your break is at the time on the schedule, not when you need it

CVS defines only adherence, so the other meanings are plain-language descriptions. Ask your employer how each is counted. The numbers can pull against each other: rushing a caller cuts your handle time but can hurt your quality score. Before you accept, ask:

"Which numbers am I measured on? What are the targets for a new hire? How long until they count? What happens if I miss them? Can I see a sample scorecard?"

These numbers can also decide whether you move up. At CVS, moving from Advocate I to II takes at least 6 months and 3 straight months of "Exceptional" scores, and targets can change with 30 days' notice (R1055334).

What it demands from your body and schedule

Share of customer service reps who told O*NET this describes their job (read October 31, 2026):

Scroll horizontally to view every column.

Demand Share
Phone conversations, every day 100%
Time pressure, every day 73%
Repetitive motion, continually or almost 75%
Sitting, continually or almost 61%
Unpleasant or angry people, every day 42%
Unpleasant or angry people, weekly but not daily 36%
A regular, set schedule 88%
Exactly 40 hours a week 67%

So this is the reverse of a warehouse. Your body is still, and your attention never is. Call centers can run 24 hours, so shifts may start early or end late, and evenings, weekends and holidays are common at busy times (BLS OOH). Production workers in telephone call centers averaged 35.8 hours a week in August 2026, a preliminary figure (BLS).

The injury numbers. Telephone call centers had 0.4 recordable injuries and illnesses per 100 full-time workers in 2024, against 2.3 for all private industry (BLS SOII, 2024). That is about one-sixth of the average, and the lowest rate in this series of guides.

What that means: you are very unlikely to get hurt at work in the way a warehouse or delivery worker does. But that number counts recorded injuries, not stress. No federal source read for this guide measures burnout in call centers, so this page gives no figure. Hours of typing and sitting are what to watch. OSHA's free computer workstation guide shows how to set up a chair, screen and keyboard (read October 31, 2026).

How to start

This week: write down one time you calmed someone down or fixed a problem, from any job or from home. Then apply to two employers on their own careers sites. Do not claim call center experience you do not have. Use a true version of this:

"I have not worked in a call center yet. When (your own example of an upset person or a problem), I (what you did), and it ended with (what happened). I can work (your real days and hours)."

What postings and BLS actually mention:

  • Diploma. High school diploma or equivalent is typical (BLS Employment Projections, 2025 to 2035).
  • Some experience. "No experience" often means any customer contact. The CVS posting asks for 1 year of customer service, with call center experience preferred. More in remote customer service jobs with no experience.
  • A license, in some fields. Reps who give finance or insurance information may need a state license, usually by exam. Some employers train you for it (BLS OOH). Foundever lists licensed customer service roles on its work-from-home page (read October 31, 2026).
  • Background check. Read background checks explained.
  • Interview. See hourly job interview questions, and resume with no experience.

Where it can lead

The ladder is real, but the floor under this job is shrinking. BLS projects a 5% decline from 2025 to 2035 as self-service systems and apps take over simple tasks. There are still about 289,500 openings a year, because people leave. All of those openings come from replacing workers (BLS OOH, read October 31, 2026). Complex problems are what stay with people, so aim for those.

FAQ

What is average handle time?

It is how long you take on each contact, on average. CVS lists it with quality and schedule adherence as a measure for moving up (R1055334, read October 31, 2026). Ask your employer how it is counted.

Are call center jobs stressful?

Often, yes. 73% of reps report time pressure every day, and 42% deal with unpleasant or angry people every day (O*NET). BLS also says the work may be stressful.

How much will I take home?

About $588 a week at $17 and 40 hours, and $734 at the $21.53 national median, after federal taxes only. Most states take more.

Will AI take this job?

Some of it. BLS projects a 5% decline by 2035 as automated systems do more simple tasks. It still projects about 289,500 openings a year.

Is it dangerous?

Not physically, compared with most hourly work. Call centers had 0.4 injuries and illnesses per 100 workers in 2024, against 2.3 for all private industry (BLS SOII).

Can I get bathroom breaks when I need them?

Ask before you accept. CVS measures adherence to assigned lunch and break times, and unavailable time. Ask how a bathroom trip counts. Rules on breaks vary by state: break laws by state.

Do I need experience?

Sometimes. BLS lists no required experience for the job as a whole, but many postings ask for some customer contact. Retail or food service often counts.
