How to Write a One-Page Resume With No Job History: Three Complete Examples

You can fill one honest page without a job. List school, caregiving, volunteering, side work or military service, with real dates. Keep the layout plain, because tracking software can misread tables (CareerOneStop). First check: Amazon and Walmart warehouse jobs need no resume. Last reviewed October 31, 2026.

First: do you need one?

Not always. Amazon says its hourly warehouse roles need no resume (read October 31, 2026). Walmart says a resume is not required, but you list your job history on the form (read October 31, 2026). Stores and job fairs may still ask for one.

Write the facts down either way: dates, addresses and two references. To write the page on your phone, use the free JobPin resume template, with no account. Once you have job history, go to resume tips.

What to list instead of jobs

CareerOneStop, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor, says a combination format works for most people. It shows skills from paid and unpaid work and still gives dates. Use it, and label unpaid work as unpaid. CareerOneStop pages here were read October 31, 2026.

Scroll horizontally to view every column.

What you did Where it goes How to write it Watch out
School Education, near the top School, city, graduation date, classes or clubs that fit No diploma? Write "attended," with dates
Caregiving Experience, marked "unpaid" What you did, how often, how long Do not write "home health aide." That title has training rules (caregiver jobs)
Volunteering Experience or "Community involvement" Group, your task, how often Say "helped" if you did not run it
Side work Experience, marked "paid side work" Babysitting, lawn care, odd jobs, with dates. CareerOneStop says those clients can be references Do not call yourself owner of a company you did not form
Military Military experience Dates, branch, rank, training and skills (CareerOneStop). O*NET's military crosswalk finds civilian job names Use civilian words
Work in prison Experience Include job skills you gained while incarcerated. The resume itself should not refer to your record (CareerOneStop) Name the real program. Never invent an employer
A gap Nowhere It is not necessary to explain the reason on a resume (CareerOneStop). Keep dates truthful Be ready to explain it in an interview

What tracking software does and does not do

An applicant tracking system (ATS) sorts applications. CareerOneStop says many companies use one for a first sort. It scores and ranks each application against the employer's list. It is likely to reject a resume that lacks the employer's keywords or uses unusual formatting. Its tips:

  • Use the posting's exact words, if they are true. A variation may be missed. Each keyword about twice is enough.
  • Keep one column. Avoid tables, text boxes, logos and columns. Keep key details out of the header and footer.
  • Do not send a skills-only resume. A functional resume may be misread or rejected. Include dated experience, and write dates as a month and year.
  • Send what the posting asks for. If it names no format, use Word or plain text. A scanned image will not be read. JobPin's template makes a .txt file or a text-based PDF.
  • Do not hide extra words in white type. It will not trick the software.

What is not known: we found no government count of how many hourly employers use this software, or how many resumes it rejects. The percentages online trace to no primary source we could find, so none appear here. No template can promise a score, as JobPin's template page says. A store manager may just read it, so our advice is to bring paper too.

A program name can show where you were. What you list is your choice, but do not swap in a made-up employer. Dates must match court and work records, because a check can show them (how to talk about a conviction, background checks explained). No permanent address? CareerOneStop says to use a place where you get mail, or a rented post office box. Long gap but no record? Keep this layout and list what filled the time. See also second chance jobs.

Turn vague lines into concrete ones

Add a number only if you can back it up.

Scroll horizontally to view every column.

Vague Concrete, if true Do not write
Took care of my mom Cared for a family member 5 days a week for 3 years: meals, medicine reminders, rides Home health aide
Helped at church Set up and cleaned up a Saturday food pantry, twice a month for a year Food pantry manager
Good with money Kept a family budget and paid all bills on time for 6 years Bookkeeper
Did yard work Mowed 4 neighbors' lawns weekly each summer, 2024 to 2026 Owner, landscaping company
Worked in the kitchen Cooked for about 300 people a shift for 3 years Chef
Hard worker Missed no tutoring sessions in one school year, per my program lead Perfect attendance, with no one to confirm it

Before you send it

  • Truth. False information can disqualify you when an employer checks, and AI can write lines that exaggerate your experience (CareerOneStop). Read every line out loud.
  • Fit. Change the objective and keywords for each job. American Job Centers give free resume feedback (free job help).
  • Privacy. Leave off your photo, Social Security number and birth date. The EEOC says employers should not ask for a photo before an offer (read October 31, 2026).

Use the same examples in hourly job interview questions.

How to verify a listing

Every opening on JobPin links to its source. Confirm the requirements on the employer's own site, and send your resume only through that site. Do not send it to someone who messaged you out of the blue. More: how JobPin verifies listings, job scam warning signs.

FAQ

What do I put on a resume if I have never worked?

School, caregiving, volunteering, side work and any training, with real dates. Mark unpaid work as unpaid. CareerOneStop says a combination format can show skills from both (read October 31, 2026).

Should I use a skills-only resume to hide having no jobs?

No. CareerOneStop says a functional resume may be misread or rejected by tracking software (read October 31, 2026). Use a short summary, skills, and dated experience, even if it is unpaid.

Do applicant tracking systems reject most resumes?

We found no government count. CareerOneStop says the software can reject resumes for missing keywords or unusual formatting (read October 31, 2026). Do not rely on percentages you see online.

Can I list caring for a family member as experience?

Yes. Mark it "unpaid" and say what you did, how often and how long. Do not use a title such as home health aide, which needs 75 hours of training at Medicare-certified agencies (42 CFR 484.80).

Do I have to put prison on my resume?

CareerOneStop says your resume should not refer to your record, and you need not address that gap there (read October 31, 2026). Do include job skills you gained. Be ready to discuss it, and never lie on an application.

Does my resume have to be one page?

With no job history, one page is enough. CareerOneStop says one to two pages (read October 31, 2026), and JobPin's resume tips say one page usually works for hourly jobs.

Should I add a photo?

No. The EEOC says employers should not ask for one before an offer is accepted (read October 31, 2026).
