Jobs for Workers 55 and Over: Social Security, Medicare, Free Training, and Which Roles Fit Your Body

At 66, earning $1,600 a month is $19,200 a year. That is $5,280 under the 2026 Social Security limit of $24,480, so nothing is withheld (SSA). At full retirement age the limit ends. Below: Medicare, paid training at 55, age rights and roles. Last reviewed October 31, 2026.

Will a job cut your Social Security?

Only if you are under full retirement age and earn over the limit.

Scroll horizontally to view every column.

Your situation 2026 limit 2027 limit Above the limit
Under full retirement age all year $24,480 ($2,040 a month) $25,560 ($2,130 a month) $1 withheld for every $2
You reach full retirement age this year $65,160 ($5,430 a month), counting only months before that birthday month $67,920 ($5,660 a month) $1 withheld for every $3
From the month you reach full retirement age No limit No limit Nothing withheld

Sources: SSA, 2027 COLA fact sheet; SSA, Exempt Amounts Under the Earnings Test, both read October 31, 2026.

Worked example: a 66-year-old earning $1,600 a month in 2026. First find your full retirement age, because the limit depends on it. People who are 66 in 2026 were born in 1959 or 1960. If born in 1959, it is 66 and 10 months. If born in 1960, it is 67 (SSA).

  • Born in 1960: you reach 67 in 2027, so you are under full retirement age all of 2026. The limit is $24,480. $1,600 x 12 = $19,200. You are $5,280 under. Withheld: $0.
  • Born in 1959: you reach 66 and 10 months during 2026 for most birth months. The limit is $65,160, and only months before then count. Even 12 months at $1,600 is far under it. Withheld: $0. If you were born in January or February 1959, you reached it in 2025 and no limit applies.

If your hours grow. At $2,800 a month you earn $33,600 for the year. If you are under full retirement age all year, that is $9,120 over the limit. Half of that, $4,560, is withheld from your benefits.

The money is not lost. At full retirement age, SSA raises your monthly benefit for good to credit the months it withheld (SSA, read October 31, 2026). Whether that pays you back in full depends on how long you collect.

Other rules that matter:

  • What counts: wages and net self-employment pay, including bonuses, commissions and vacation pay. Pensions, annuities, investment income, interest, veterans benefits and other government or military retirement do not count (SSA).
  • First year rule: in one year, usually your first year of retirement, SSA can pay a full check for any whole month you earn $2,040 or less, even if your yearly pay is over the limit (SSA, 2026).
  • You still pay into the system: 7.65% comes out of wages at any age (SSA, 2027 fact sheet and FAQ, June 30, 2025). On $1,600 a month that is $122.40. If this year ranks among your highest earning years, SSA raises your benefit (SSA).
  • Your benefits may become taxable. Say your benefit is $1,500 a month. Combined income is your adjusted gross income plus half of your benefits: $19,200 + $9,000 = $28,200. Over $25,000 for a single filer, part of your benefit is taxed (SSA FAQ, June 30, 2025). You can ask SSA to withhold tax. Check your own numbers with SSA's earnings test calculator.

Before you take more hours, call SSA at 1-800-772-1213.

How a job affects Medicare

What matters is whether you have health coverage through current work.

Scroll horizontally to view every column.

Your situation What to do
Job has no health plan, or you did not join Sign up for Part A and Part B when first eligible, usually 65. If you sign up later you may pay a penalty, typically 10% for each year you could have had Part B
You or your spouse have a group plan from current work, open to everyone at the company You can wait on Part B with no penalty. You get an 8-month window after work or coverage ends, whichever comes first
That employer has 20 or more workers The plan generally pays first, then Medicare
That employer has fewer than 20 workers Medicare pays first. Ask the employer whether you must sign up, or the plan may not pay
You have COBRA or retiree coverage Do not wait. COBRA does not extend your time to sign up, and retiree plans may not pay without Parts A and B
You have a Health Savings Account Stop contributions 6 months before you retire or apply for benefits, to avoid a tax penalty

Sources: Medicare.gov, Working past 65, read October 31, 2026; CMS, How Medicare Works with Other Insurance, February 2026.

Most part-time jobs will not change this: only 23% of part-timers can get medical coverage at work (BLS, March 2026). See part-time jobs. For free one-on-one help, find your State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) through Medicare.gov, or call 1-800-633-4227.

Paid training at 55 and over: SCSEP

The Senior Community Service Employment Program places you in part-time training at nonprofits and public sites such as schools, hospitals and senior centers.

  • Who qualifies: age 55 or older, unemployed, and family income at or under 125% of the poverty level (U.S. DOL, read October 31, 2026). For 2026 that is $19,950 for one person and $27,050 for two in the lower 48 states (125% of HHS's $15,960 and $21,640). Ask how your local program counts Social Security.
  • Pay: the highest of the federal, state or local minimum wage, for an average of 20 hours a week (U.S. DOL). At Arizona's $15.15, that is $303.00 a week. At the federal $7.25, it is $145.00.
  • Limit: generally 48 months in total (20 CFR 641.570).
  • Who goes first: veterans and qualified spouses, then people over 65 or with a disability, among others (U.S. DOL).
  • The catch: pay is low and slots vary by area. Congress funded the program at $395 million for fiscal 2026, and the fiscal 2027 budget request would end it (U.S. DOL Budget in Brief). That is a proposal, not law.

Which roles fit, by what they ask of your body

19.1% of people 65 and over were in the labor force in 2025, including 33.3% at ages 65 to 69 and 18.8% at 70 to 74 (BLS CPS, Table 3, 2025). Unemployment for 65 and over was 3.3%, and they were 7.0% of all employed people (our arithmetic from the same table).

Crossing guards and flaggers $18.32 38.2% 88% stand continually; 99% outdoors daily Out in all weather

Sources: pay, BLS OEWS, May 2025 national median (personal care aides, BLS's combined home health and personal care figure); share, our arithmetic from BLS CPS Table 11b, 2025; demands, O*NET OnLine, updated 2026; licenses and catches, BLS OOH, read October 31, 2026. A high share shows who holds a job, not who gets hired.

If standing is hard, look at the rows with "sit." If you have a disability, you can ask for a reasonable accommodation, such as a stool. Employers with 15 or more workers are covered (EEOC, read October 31, 2026). Do not say you can do a task if you cannot. It can get you hurt.

About employers. JobPin looked for national hourly employers whose own pages name older workers. Few do. Home Instead's Birmingham, AL office recruits retirees for part-time caregiving with paid training (read October 31, 2026). Pay varies by franchise and the job is physical: see caregiver jobs. Costco states guaranteed minimum hours and schedules three weeks ahead for part-timers (read October 31, 2026), which helps if you plan around the Social Security limit.

About greeter jobs. At Walmart the role appears as "Asset Protection Customer Host." A Kansas City, KS posting shows $15.00 to $28.00, part time, with duties beyond greeting, such as checking receipts and helping with returns (read October 31, 2026). Plan on the low end, and ask what you must lift.

Judge any offer with pay benchmarks and how to read pay on a job posting.

Your rights: age discrimination

The Age Discrimination in Employment Act protects people 40 and over from age bias in hiring, firing, pay and more. It applies to employers with 20 or more workers (EEOC, read October 31, 2026). State laws may add to this, so ask your state civil rights agency. This is information, not legal advice.

  • Job ads: ads generally cannot state an age preference. An ad seeking "recent college graduates" may violate the law (EEOC).
  • Asking your age: the law does not ban the question, but it "will be closely scrutinized" (EEOC).
  • Deadline: 180 calendar days to file a charge. It extends to 300 days only if a state law bans age discrimination and a state agency enforces it (EEOC).
  • How to file: start at the EEOC Public Portal, linked from eeoc.gov, or call 1-800-669-4000. You generally must file with the EEOC before you can sue.

Write down dates, names and what was said on the day it happens.

Resume advice for older workers

  • Lead with the last 10 to 15 years and what this ad asks for. One line can cover older jobs: "Earlier roles in (field)."
  • Leave graduation years off if you wish. But if an application asks for a date, answer truthfully. A false date can cost you the job at the background check.
  • Show that you use today's tools. Name them only if you can use them: (your own examples, such as a tablet point-of-sale system or scheduling app).
  • Say what you want. "Seeking part-time work, about 20 hours a week" helps you avoid jobs that will not fit your Social Security plan.
  • Do not hide a limit that could hurt you. Bring it up when you discuss the job duties.

How to verify a listing

Every opening on JobPin links to its source posting. Open it, check the date, and confirm the pay, hours and physical duties on the employer's own site. Work-from-home offers are a common scam. A real employer never asks you to pay for a job, or to deposit a check and send money back (FTC, updated August 13, 2026). More: job scam warning signs and how JobPin verifies listings.

FAQ

How much can I earn on Social Security in 2026?

$24,480 before benefits are withheld, if you are under full retirement age all year. It is $65,160 in the year you reach it, counting months before that. From that month on, there is no limit (SSA).

How much can I earn in 2027?

$25,560 if under full retirement age all year, and $67,920 in the year you reach it (SSA).

Do I lose the benefits SSA withholds?

No. At full retirement age SSA raises your monthly benefit to credit the months it withheld (SSA, read October 31, 2026).

Does my pension count toward the limit?

No. Pensions, annuities, investment income, interest and veterans benefits do not count. Wages and net self-employment pay do (SSA).

Will a part-time job affect my Medicare?

Usually not, unless the job gives you group health coverage. Then ask how it works with Medicare before you delay Part B.

Can an employer refuse to hire me because of my age?

No, if you are 40 or over and the employer has 20 or more workers (EEOC). Proving it can be hard. File within 180 days, or 300 in some states.

Is SCSEP still running?

Yes, as of October 31, 2026. It had $395 million in fiscal 2026. The fiscal 2027 budget request would end it, but that is not law (U.S. DOL). Call 1-877-872-5627 to check your area.
