Two kinds of tax season jobs

Entry level, mostly in an office. Client service, receptionist and first-year preparer roles at H&R Block, Jackson Hewitt and Liberty Tax, plus IRS phone roles. Training comes first, usually in the fall. The IRS says its seasonal contact representative jobs need no prior tax experience (IRS, May 27, 2026).

Experienced, often remote. Intuit's TurboTax roles ask for at least two seasons of paid tax prep and an active PTIN (Intuit posting, viewed October 21, 2026). H&R Block's experienced tax professional roles ask for at least one year of tax, accounting, finance or bookkeeping work (H&R Block posting, viewed October 21, 2026).

If your holiday job ends in January, the entry-level track is the fastest switch. See jobs hiring in January.

What you need before you apply

  1. A PTIN if you will prepare returns for pay. Anyone paid to prepare or help prepare federal returns needs a valid 2027 PTIN first. The fee is $18.75 and is not refundable (IRS, updated October 15, 2026). Jackson Hewitt and Intuit list it in their postings.
  2. Training. H&R Block's Income Tax Course has no tuition. Course materials cost $149 in most states and $99 in Minnesota, and are free in Maine, New York, South Carolina and Tennessee. The course is about 40 hours (70 in California, 81 in Oregon), you must be 18, and you need a high school diploma or equivalent. Finishing it is "neither an offer nor a guarantee of employment" (H&R Block course page, viewed October 21, 2026). Ask any employer whether training hours are paid.
  3. A check of your record. The IRS fingerprints new hires after a tentative offer (IRS, May 27, 2026). Private employers list their own checks in each posting.
  4. Time. Intuit's Tax Associate role needs at least 20 hours a week (Intuit posting, viewed October 21, 2026). Jackson Hewitt's Phoenix posting offers full or part time.
  5. A home setup for remote roles. H&R Block's work-from-home customer service role needs a wired internet connection of at least 15 Mbps and a private space for calls (posting 2026-76948). See the remote jobs guide and customer service jobs guide, and prepare with interview tips.

Who should pick which employer

  • No tax experience, want to start this season: Jackson Hewitt entry preparer ($17 to $18 an hour in the Phoenix posting), H&R Block client service or customer service ($16.06 to $24.09 in the Missouri remote posting), or an IRS phone role ($19.52 to $25.37 in the May 2026 Jacksonville release).
  • Two or more seasons of paid prep: Intuit Tax Associate, virtual ($19.12 to $28.49 by state in the October 2026 posting), or an H&R Block experienced tax professional role.
  • EA, CPA or attorney: Intuit Credentialed Tax Expert, or senior H&R Block roles.
  • Want work after April: Ask about year-round roles at your interview. Read how seasonal jobs become permanent.

Customer service pay is a good benchmark for these roles: customer service representatives earned a national median of $21.53 an hour in May 2025 (BLS OEWS). Pay floors also rise in many states on January 1, 2027; see minimum wage by state.

Watch for tax job scams

Real tax employers do not charge you to apply, ask you to buy software to start, or ask you to move money for clients. The IRS hires through USAJOBS. If a "remote tax job" asks you to receive refunds or payments into your own bank account, stop. Reported losses to job scams reached $501 million in 2024 (FTC, March 10, 2025). FAQ

Do I need experience to get a tax season job?

Not for entry roles. Jackson Hewitt's Phoenix posting for January to April 2027 prefers experience but offers training, and IRS seasonal contact representative jobs need no prior tax experience (IRS, May 27, 2026). Intuit's Tax Associate role does need two or more seasons of paid prep.

How much do seasonal tax preparers make?

It depends on the employer and city. Jackson Hewitt: $17 to $18 an hour in Phoenix and $14 to $17 plus commission for experienced preparers in Covington, Georgia. Intuit Tax Associate: $19.12 to $28.49 by state. H&R Block experienced tax professional in Westminster, Colorado: $15.16 to $80.00 (postings viewed October 21, 2026).

When does tax season hiring start?

In the fall. H&R Block announced its hiring on September 29, 2026 (H&R Block), and Jackson Hewitt's 2027 postings were live in October 2026 (postings viewed October 21, 2026). In 2025, Jackson Hewitt held its National Hiring Week the week of November 3 (Jackson Hewitt, October 30, 2025).

Is the H&R Block Income Tax Course free?

There is no tuition, but most states charge for course materials: $149, or $99 in Minnesota. Materials are free in Maine, New York, South Carolina and Tennessee (H&R Block course page, viewed October 21, 2026). Finishing the course does not guarantee a job.

Can I do tax season work from home?

Yes, in some roles. Intuit's Tax Associate is a virtual role for experienced preparers, and H&R Block posted a 100% work-from-home seasonal customer service role in Missouri paying $16.06 to $24.09 an hour (posting 2026-76948, October 16, 2026). The H&R Block tax professional posting we opened is in person at a local office.

What is a PTIN and do I need one?

A Preparer Tax Identification Number from the IRS. Anyone paid to prepare or help prepare federal returns needs a valid 2027 PTIN before they start. It costs $18.75 (IRS PTIN page, updated October 15, 2026).

When does the 2027 tax season start and end?

The IRS announces the start date each year. The deadline for most filers is April 15, 2027, a Thursday (IRS When to File, updated May 22, 2026). Jackson Hewitt postings run January to April 2027.
