Warehouse Jobs With No Experience: Which Roles Take Beginners, What Still Screens You Out, and Your First Week

Package handler, sorter and freight jobs are the real way in. UPS in Chantilly, VA, posts "No experience necessary" at $21.00 (October 28, 2026). You still face lift limits and often drug and background checks. Seven states regulate warehouse quotas. Last reviewed October 31, 2026.

Which roles take beginners

BLS lists hand laborers and material movers with no formal credential, no related work experience, and short on-the-job training. Some workers need "only a few days," others up to a month (BLS OOH, read October 31, 2026).

ONET puts stockers and order fillers (53-7065), hand packers (53-7064), hand movers (53-7062) and forklift operators (53-7051) in the same group: Job Zone 1-2, "Very Little to Some Preparation Needed." That group is broad. It says some jobs need little or no experience and others need "several months to a year" (ONET, updated 2026). So the zone is a hint. The posting decides.

No government source counts how many warehouse jobs take beginners, so this page gives no percentage. Here is what postings said when read on October 31, 2026. Postings close fast, and rows marked "since closed" are gone. Search the employer's careers site for your area.

These take beginners:

Role Employer and location Pay in the posting What it says
Seasonal package handler UPS, Chantilly, VA $21.00 "No experience necessary"
Seasonal part-time sorter Amazon, Wilmer, TX (read October 31, 2026, since closed) Up to $21.50 No experience listed. Amazon says most hourly jobs need no resume or interview
Freight handler, Friday to Sunday nights Sam's Club, Lithia Springs, GA $22.00 to $25.50 at the top, $22.60 to $26.10 in the text "If none are listed, there are no minimum qualifications." None are listed
Seasonal equipment operator Amazon, Dallas, TX (read October 31, 2026, since closed) Up to $20.10 "No prior experience required." Amazon trains and certifies for free
Part-time package handler FedEx, Carol Stream, IL $18.75 to $19.75 Silent on experience. Ask

These do not:

Role Employer and location Pay in the posting What it says
Forklift operator DHL, Inwood, WV $21.10 "Previous experience operating a forklift"
Fulfillment associate PeopleReady, Calabasas, CA (posted October 23) $18.42 "1-2 years of warehouse fulfillment experience"
Group coordinator lead DHL, Newville, PA $19.45 plus $0.50 shift premium "6-12 months warehouse experience" and the same on a forklift

Forklift is the split to watch: one employer trains you free, another wants experience first. Read forklift certification before you pay for any class.

Compare: UPS vs FedEx, Amazon's hiring process, Walmart distribution center jobs. National medians: $17.95 for stockers, $19.35 for hand movers (BLS, May 2025). Your metro: pay benchmarks. Not sure the work suits you? Read what warehouse work is really like.

What still screens you out

Employer pages read October 31, 2026, list these.

Scroll horizontally to view every column.

Screen What employers state What to do
Lifting UPS Chantilly: up to 70 pounds. DHL Inwood: up to 50. Amazon Coppell, TX: up to 49, with team lifts above 50. PeopleReady Calabasas: up to 30 Pick jobs by the number. Do not say yes to a weight you cannot lift
Drug test Amazon reviews "your background check and drug test." PeopleReady: "Background check and drug test required." Walmart states a "drug-free workplace" policy but no test step. The UPS and FedEx postings above do not say Ask before you quit anything. Amazon's marijuana policy is in its hiring guide
Record Amazon and PeopleReady, as above. A FedEx posting in City of Industry, CA, cites California fair chance laws Read background checks explained and fair chance warehouse jobs
Age Amazon: 18 or older. Federal law bars anyone under 18 from operating a forklift (OSHA) Under 18? See jobs that hire at 16
Papers and language UPS: "Authorized to work in the U.S." FedEx uses E-Verify. An Amazon posting in Wilmer, TX, read October 31, 2026, since closed: "pass a job assessment in English" Gather your documents now
Conditions Amazon postings read October 31, 2026, since closed: freezer work down to -10°F for up to two hours, and handling pork and alcohol (Wood Dale, IL); mezzanine work up to 40 feet, where applicable (Wilmer, TX) Read this part of the posting closely
A ride UPS tells new hires to "have reliable transportation" Test the trip at your shift hour. Buses may not run at 3:00 AM

Your first week

No public source sets a standard first week. Here is what is stated.

  • Training. New workers often shadow a coworker and learn safety rules (BLS OOH). An Amazon posting in Wilmer, TX, read October 31, 2026, since closed, promised "on-the-job training during your first few days," and said training hours may not match the shift you picked. Ask for them in writing.
  • Safety training. You have the right to safety training "in a language you understand" (OSHA, read October 31, 2026). In a staffing job, the agency and the site are "jointly responsible" for your safety (OSHA, read October 31, 2026).
  • Gear. Your employer must supply required protective gear at no cost. It need not pay for basic safety-toe shoes you can wear off the job, or for normal work boots (29 CFR 1910.132(h), eCFR). It must also train you before you work in that gear (29 CFR 1910.132(f)). UPS requires sturdy boots or slip-resistant shoes, not sneakers or sandals. Amazon's Coppell, TX, posting, read October 31, 2026, lists a $110 Zappos gift code. Ask before you buy.
  • Forklifts. You drive only under direct supervision until training and evaluation are done (29 CFR 1910.178(l)).
  • What hurts. The most common warehouse injuries are strains, "mainly from overexertion in lifting and lowering," and being struck by trucks (OSHA, read October 31, 2026). Warehousing ran 4.8 injuries and illnesses per 100 full-time workers in 2024, against 2.3 for private industry (BLS SOII). If something is unsafe, call OSHA at 1-800-321-6742. Retaliation for complaining is illegal.
  • Attendance. New Amazon warehouse hires get a one-time 10 hours of unpaid time off, then earn more (Amazon FAQ, read October 31, 2026). That is two 5-hour shifts. Learn your site's rule on Day 1.
  • Pace. Not every warehouse sets a rate. No source shows how long new hires get to reach one, so ask.

Quota laws in seven states

A quota is a set speed or count you can be punished for missing. Rhode Island's governor counts seven states with these laws (July 13, 2026). They cover large warehouses only. Each row was read October 31, 2026, from the agency or legislature. This is information, not legal advice.

Scroll horizontally to view every column.

State Who is covered What the law says Call
California (AB 701, 2022) 100 or more workers at one site, or 1,000 statewide Written description of each quota at hire. A quota cannot block meal or rest breaks, bathroom use or safety rules Labor Commissioner, 1-833-526-4636

Washington (RCW 49.84, July 1, 2024) 100 at one site, or 1,000 statewide Written description at hire. Quota time must include rest breaks, bathroom use and travel to them. No adverse action for an undisclosed or illegal quota L&I, 1-866-219-7321. Safety: 1-800-423-7233

Oregon (HB 4127, January 1, 2025) 100 at one site, or 1,000 statewide. Not drivers Written summary at hire and within two business days of a change. No adverse action unless you got it BOLI, 971-245-3844
Connecticut (Public Act 26-1, July 1, 2026) 250 at one site, or 1,000 statewide. Not drivers Written description at hire. A quota cannot block meal periods or bathroom use, or rest only on ranking you against coworkers You or the Attorney General can sue in Superior Court
Rhode Island (S 2504 Sub A, from January 1, 2027) 100 at one site, or 1,000 statewide Written description at hire, and two days' notice of a change. A quota cannot block meal or rest periods or bathroom use R.I. Department of Labor and Training

Elsewhere, call your state labor office. Breaks are a separate question: break laws by state. If you are covered, say this, then keep a copy:

"Can I have the written description of my quota: the number, the time period, and what happens if I miss it?"

Start this week

  1. Monday. Write down the shifts you can truly work, the weight you can truly lift, and how you get there at that hour.
  2. Tuesday. Apply to two employers that take beginners. Amazon needs no resume, but its pre-hire appointment is unpaid. UPS says you could schedule your first day "within 10 minutes." Need a resume? Use warehouse resume tips.
  3. Wednesday. Gather originals of your work papers. UPS asks for one List A document, or one List B and one List C document.
  4. Thursday. Make the trip at your shift hour. Read warehouse interview questions in case you get a call.
  5. Friday. No offer yet? Try a free American Job Center, or one staffing branch. Ask who your real employer is.

If you have no car: start with sites on a bus line. Amazon lists free or discounted transit passes among its discounts, but check that a bus runs at your shift hour (Amazon benefits, read October 31, 2026).

How to verify a listing

Every opening on JobPin links to its source posting. Open it and check the experience line, the lift limit and the end date, since seasonal jobs have one. Honest employers never ask you to pay to get hired (FTC, read October 31, 2026). More: how JobPin verifies listings and job scam warning signs.

FAQ

Can I get a warehouse job with no experience?

Yes, in many entry roles. UPS, Amazon and Sam's Club postings read October 31, 2026, ask for none. Forklift and lead jobs often do.

How much do beginners earn?

It depends on the posting. Those above ranged from $18.75 to $26.10. At the $17.95 stocker median and 40 hours, you take home about $619 a week after federal taxes, as a single filer (warehouse guide).

Will I be drug tested?

Often, but not always stated. Amazon and PeopleReady say so in writing. The UPS and FedEx postings read here do not mention it, so ask.

How much do I have to lift?

It depends on the job. Postings read October 31, 2026: UPS Chantilly up to 70 pounds, DHL Inwood up to 50, Amazon Coppell up to 49, and PeopleReady Calabasas up to 30.

Do I have to buy my own boots?

Sometimes. Federal rules let employers skip paying for basic safety-toe shoes you can wear off the job, and normal work boots (29 CFR 1910.132(h)). Other required gear is on them.

Can I be fired for missing my rate?

It can happen. In California, New York, Washington, Minnesota, Oregon and Connecticut, large warehouses cannot punish you for missing an undisclosed quota. Rhode Island joins on January 1, 2027. Elsewhere, call your state labor office.

Do I need a car?

Not by law, but UPS tells hires to have reliable transportation. Test your route at your shift hour first.
