What the ad words mean
We found no federal rule that defines these words.

| Wording | What it can mean | What it does not promise | Ask this |
|---|---|---|---|
| Now hiring | The employer is taking applications | An opening at your site, or that anyone is reading them this week | "Is this still open, and for which location?" |
| Hiring immediately, immediate start | The employer wants someone soon | A start date. Screening still comes first | "How long from offer to first shift?" |
| Urgently hiring | On Indeed, a label tied to its paid Premium Sponsored Jobs product and on by default there. Indeed says it means an immediate need (Indeed, updated June 10, 2026; help page read October 31, 2026) | More hurry than an employer that did not buy that product | "When do you expect to fill this?" |
| Start today, same-day start | Usually temp, day labor or gig work, one shift at a time | Regular hours or a second shift | "Is this one shift or ongoing? Who is my employer?" |
What JobPin's own labels mean
JobPin does not judge who is in a hurry. Its labels come from one fact: the posting date the provider sends (JobPin jobs service, read October 31, 2026).
Scroll horizontally to view every column.
| Label | What it means on JobPin | What it does not mean |
|---|---|---|
| New today | Posted in the last 24 hours | That anyone has opened an application |
| Hiring now | Posted 1 to 3 days ago | That the employer needs someone urgently |
| Updated recently | Posted 3 to 7 days ago | That the employer changed or renewed the ad |
| Recently checked | Posted more than 7 days ago, or no date came with it | That a person confirmed the job is open |
Job cards show the age ("Today," "1d ago" or "Date unavailable") instead of a label, plus the source, such as "via adzuna.com," and a "View job" link (read October 31, 2026).
On October 31, 2026, all 50 warehouse listings in a sample from JobPin's feed read "New today." A label that common tells you the ad is fresh, not which employer needs you most. A recent date also does not prove a role is still open (JobPin About, read October 31, 2026). More: how JobPin verifies listings.
The real steps between applying and a first shift
No public source gives a typical number of days for hourly jobs. These steps come from employers and federal rules. State rules vary. This is not legal advice.

| Step | What happens | Rule or example |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Apply | A fast offer is not a start date | UPS: many roles can bring an offer in under 10 minutes (read October 31, 2026) |
| 2. In-person step | ID check, appointment or fingerprints. Ask if it is paid | Amazon's pre-hire appointment is unpaid, and you bring I-9 ID. UPS's Dallas airport site adds fingerprints (both read October 31, 2026) |
| 3. Background check, drug test | Before buying a report, the employer must give you a stand-alone written notice and get your written permission. If it may cost you the job, you get a copy first (FTC, October 2016) | Amazon checks both before its formal offer. USPS screens after you accept (both read October 31, 2026). See background checks explained |
| 4. Form I-9 | You complete Section 1 by your first day. USCIS says employers may not ask before you accept an offer. The employer completes Section 2 within 3 business days of your start: start Monday, done by Thursday. For a job under 3 business days, it is due on day one | USCIS Handbook M-274 (Section 1 reviewed April 2, 2025; Section 2 read October 31, 2026). You choose which listed documents to show. See documents you need to start a job |
| 5. Gear, training | You may need work shoes | UPS rules out sneakers. Amazon gives a shoe credit of up to $110 (both read October 31, 2026) |
| 6. First paycheck | It may cover only part of a pay period | See your first paycheck explained and jobs with weekly pay |
Which jobs can really start this week
Our read as of October 31, 2026. No employer promises it.
Scroll horizontally to view every column.
| Job type | This week? | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| Temp or day labor through an agency | Often the fastest. PeopleReady lists five worker steps, and its Los Angeles branch advertises same-day staffing to businesses (read October 31, 2026) | Job by job, with no set hours |
| Fast food, restaurants | Possible. Chick-fil-A says its franchise operators do their own hiring (jobs that hire at 16, viewed October 19, 2026) | No chain we read publishes a timeline |
| UPS handler or helper, peak season | More likely next week. UPS says you could start the following week, after onboarding (read October 31, 2026) | No weekly hours promised. A Dallas job posted October 31, 2026, read as filled that same day. See UPS seasonal jobs |
| Amazon warehouse | Sometimes | Day 1 waits on an unpaid appointment, a background check and a drug test. See Amazon warehouse hiring |
| Store seasonal | Depends on the store. Target lists recruiting events in 13 states (read October 31, 2026) | See seasonal jobs |
| App-based gig delivery | Maybe. We could not confirm a timeline | You pay for fuel, maintenance and insurance (driver jobs with no CDL, reviewed October 18, 2026) |
| USPS holiday jobs | Not usually. Screening follows your acceptance, then email to set a start date (USPS, read October 31, 2026) | Short application windows |
| Security guard, childcare | Usually not. Most states require guards to pass a check and train. Many require checks for childcare staff (BLS, read October 31, 2026) | Rules vary by state |
| Home health aide, nursing assistant | No. Federal rules require at least 75 hours of training (42 CFR 484.80 and 483.152) | Personal care aides have no federal minimum (HHA vs PCA vs CNA, reviewed October 18, 2026) |
| CDL truck driver | No. Class A training takes two to eight weeks after the written tests (how to get a CDL, reviewed October 18, 2026) | Some carriers pay for it |
Under 18? You may need a work permit first.
Do the math: a fast job or a better rate
Example rates and hours, not offers. Take-home subtracts 7.65% (IRS Topic 751) and federal withholding for a single filer paid weekly (IRS Publication 15-T, 2026), but not state tax.
Scroll horizontally to view every column.
| Example | Weekly gross | Weekly take-home | Starts | Total after 4 weeks |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Temp job, $16.00 for 24 hours | $384.00 | $347.18 | This week | $1,388.72 |
| Parcel job, $21.00 for 20 hours | $420.00 | $376.83 | Next week | $1,130.49 |
At these numbers, the later job needs 13 weeks to catch up. If rent is due soon, the faster job can win. Redo this with your real hours.
How to find a job that really starts soon
Our advice: if you have a car but no experience, start with warehouse, parcel and temp work. If you have no car, look at stores and restaurants on a bus line.
- Today: find your ID documents and write down your real hours.
- Search by age. Open anything marked "Today" or "1d ago" on warehouse jobs with no experience, general labor jobs or retail jobs. Then open the source.
- Call within a day, using the script below. Log it in the application tracker. If you hear nothing, see how to follow up.
- Add in-person options: a staffing office, a store manager, or job fairs. UPS says a local fair may lead to an offer on the spot (read October 31, 2026). See how to get hired at a job fair. American Job Centers can help for free.
"Hi, my name is (your name). I applied for (job title) on (date). I can start (date) and work (days and hours). What is the next step, and how long does it usually take to get to a first shift? Is any step before that unpaid?"
When "immediate start" signals a scam
One sign is enough to slow down. These come from the FTC, unless noted.
- You did not apply, and a text or chat app says you are hired. "Real employers will never contact you that way" (April 30, 2026).
- You must pay to start. "Honest employers, including the federal government, will never ask you to pay to get a job" (read October 31, 2026). The one exception, contractor platforms, is in how to check if a job is real.
- A check arrives before you work. It will bounce, and the bank will want its money (read October 31, 2026).
- You get a deadline. "If someone insists a gig will disappear if you don't accept it immediately, walk away" (February 24, 2026).
- Pay is named but no job is. Scam texts often mention daily or weekly pay with no job details (April 30, 2026).
- They want your bank or Social Security number before you accept a real offer. Real I-9 paperwork comes after you accept (USCIS, reviewed April 2, 2025).
