| Employer and type | Hours stated | Any minimum? | Pay in a posting read October 31, 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| UPS, permanent part-time | Not stated on the jobs page | 3.5 hours a day under the Teamsters contract | $21.00 contract start (Article 22) |
| UPS, seasonal | "Hours can vary" | Not stated. Set end date, usually October to December | $21.00, Chantilly, VA (posted October 28) |
| FedEx, part time | One shift a day, generally 3 to 6 hours, "based on package volume" | None stated | $18.75 to $19.75, Carol Stream, IL. $18.40, Norfolk, VA. $20.50 to $23.00, City of Industry, CA |
| FedEx, casual | Up to 24 hours a week. Shifts "usually published weekly" | None | Not read |
| Amazon, regular part time | 20 to 29 hours a week | Range only | Up to $21.50, Wood Dale, IL (since closed) |
| Amazon, regular flex time | 0 to 19 hours a week | No. The range starts at zero | Up to $22.50, Channahon, IL (since closed) |
| Amazon, seasonal part time | 0 to 29 hours a week | No | Up to $21.50, Wilmer, TX (since closed) |
"Up to" is Amazon's wording. The Wood Dale posting, read October 31, 2026, since closed, also listed $19.50 to $20.00 as starting pay, including the highest shift differential, so the math below uses $19.50. Ask which number fits your shift. Norfolk shows $18.40 as its pay range, but also says wages begin at $17.90, so confirm it. UPS and FedEx compared line by line: UPS vs FedEx package handler. The real shift windows
UPS is the only one of the three that prints clock times for all its shifts (read October 31, 2026). It says times may vary by location.
Scroll horizontally to view every column.
| UPS shift | About | Fits | Hard part |
|---|---|---|---|
| Preload | 3:00 AM to 9:00 AM | Afternoon classes, or a job that starts after 10:00 AM | A 3:00 AM start, and buses may not run |
| Sunrise | 3:00 AM to 8:00 AM | Morning free by 8:30 AM if you live close | Same start, loading tractor trailers |
| Day | 10:30 AM to 4:30 PM | Evening classes, or an early job that ends by 10:00 AM | Rules out most day jobs |
| Twilight | 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM | Day classes, or a job that ends by 4:00 PM | Tight after a 5:00 PM quit time |
| Night | 11:00 PM to 3:00 AM | Only if you can sleep after 3:00 AM | Hard to pair with a morning job |
FedEx and Amazon name windows but not always clock times. FedEx in Hagerstown, MD, lists early morning, mid-day, evening and overnight. A FedEx posting in Norfolk, read October 31, 2026, sought "Early morning shift (3AM-9AM)." An Amazon posting in Wilmer, TX, read that day, since closed, listed early morning, daytime, evening and overnight. Overnight pay and sleep: night shift warehouse jobs.
Hours are not guaranteed
Federal law does not define part-time, and an employer may change your hours "without giving prior notice" unless an agreement says otherwise (U.S. DOL, read October 31, 2026). A few places have schedule laws: part-time jobs near me.
The UPS contract is the exception here: "a minimum daily three and one-half (3-1/2) hour guarantee" for part-timers under Article 22. The Teamsters add that "you must show up on time" to enforce it (March 2024). That is a floor per day you work, not a promise of five days.

| Example | Hours a week | Gross | SS and Medicare | Federal tax | Take-home |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| UPS, $21.00, guarantee only, 5 days | 17.5 | $367.50 | $28.11 | $5.79 | $333.60 |
| UPS, $21.00, 5 hours, 5 days | 25 | $525.00 | $40.16 | $21.54 | $463.30 |
| FedEx, $18.75, 3 hours, 5 days | 15 | $281.25 | $21.52 | $0.00 | $259.73 |
| FedEx, $18.75, 6 hours, 5 days | 30 | $562.50 | $43.03 | $25.58 | $493.89 |
| Amazon flex, $19.50 | 10 | $195.00 | $14.92 | $0.00 | $180.08 |
| Amazon part time, $19.50, low end | 20 | $390.00 | $29.84 | $8.04 | $352.12 |
| Amazon part time, $19.50, high end | 29 | $565.50 | $43.26 | $25.94 | $496.30 |
Assumptions: this is your only job, single filer, standard W-4, paid weekly, using IRS Publication 15-T (2026). Social Security and Medicare at 7.65% (IRS Topic 751). No state income tax, as in Texas; most states take more. Five days a week is an example, not a promise. More: your first paycheck explained.
The FedEx rows are the same job, and $234.16 apart. So budget rent on the low row, and treat the rest as extra. UPS, FedEx and Amazon all state weekly pay: jobs with weekly pay. National medians, for comparison: $17.95 for stockers and $19.35 for hand movers (BLS, May 2025). By metro: pay benchmarks.
Benefits for part-timers
Only 23% of part-time workers can get medical coverage at work (BLS, March 2026). Here is what these three state, read October 31, 2026.

| Employer and type | Medical | Other |
|---|---|---|
| UPS, part-time | After nine months of active employment (contract Article 34). UPS lists "full healthcare" after a waiting period | 401(k). Up to $5,250 a year in tuition, $25,000 lifetime, from day one at select locations |
| FedEx, part time | After 91 days, if you average at least 17 hours a week | Up to $5,250 a year in tuition. The Norfolk posting says both "first day" and "after completing 90 continuous days," so ask |
| FedEx, casual | "Not eligible for benefits unless required by applicable law" | None stated |
| Amazon, regular part time | None listed. Free medical advice line | Dental and vision after 90 days, employee only. 401(k) match. Paid time you earn. Career Choice after 90 days |
| Amazon, flex time | None listed. Free medical advice line | 401(k) match. Paid time you earn |
| Amazon, seasonal part time | None listed. Free medical advice line | 401(k) match. Paid time you earn |
Watch the 17-hour line at FedEx. Five days at 3.5 hours is 17.5 hours, just over it. Five days at 3 hours is 15, under it. If health coverage is why you want this job, ask what handlers at that station averaged over the last three months. Amazon says its benefits vary by location, hours, tenure and job type.
Fitting it around school or another job

| Your situation | Start here | Why it may not work |
|---|---|---|
| Daytime classes that end by 4:00 PM | UPS twilight, or a FedEx evening shift | Late labs and exams. Shift times are approximate |
| Evening classes | UPS day, or a FedEx mid-day shift | Not every station hires every window |
| Class times change each term | FedEx casual, or Amazon flex | Hours are capped, and benefits are thin or none |
| You work 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM | Twilight | Two jobs back to back, on your feet all day |
| You work 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM | UPS night only | About four or five hours to sleep before work. Hard to keep up |
| You need one set paycheck | Consider full time instead | Part-time pay moves with volume |
| You are under 18 | See jobs that hire at 16 | Amazon requires 18. Federal law bars under-18s from forklifts (OSHA) |
Two jobs? Each one withholds as if it were your only job, so you may owe in April. The fix is Step 2 on Form W-4: part-time jobs near me has the worked math.
Ask this before you accept:
"What did people in this job average in hours over the last three months? What happens to my hours in slow weeks? Is there a daily minimum? How many hours do I need to keep benefits? Can I keep (days and times) free?"
When part-time is a bad fit: you need the same amount every week, or your only ride stops running before the shift ends. It is also hard on your body: BLS says hand movers have some of the highest injury and illness rates of all jobs (read October 31, 2026), and a short shift still means lifting. What the work is like: warehouse jobs guide. Seasonal first? UPS says continued work "is not guaranteed": can a seasonal job become permanent.
