What employers have actually said
We read each source on October 31, 2026. The "Age" column shows how old the figure or statement is today.

| Employer | What it said | Date | Age |
|---|---|---|---|
| Michaels | "Nearly 50% of seasonal in-store positions converted to regular roles last year" | September 10, 2026 | Under 2 months; describes the 2025 season. Store roles only |
| UPS | "Nearly 35,000 seasonal employees earned permanent positions following the 2021 holidays" | September 7, 2022 | 4 years; describes a season almost 5 years ago |
| UPS | Over the last three years, "about one-third" of people hired for seasonal package handler jobs were later hired permanently | September 9, 2021 | 5 years |

Do not read any of these as your odds. A company-wide figure says nothing about your building, your shift or this year. UPS's old figures also come from a different time. UPS reports that during 2025 it cut about 48,000 operational positions and closed daily operations at 93 buildings (UPS, January 27, 2026).
What staying is worth
This shows why it can be worth asking, and also why not to depend on it.
- A UPS permanent part-timer has a contract guarantee of 3.5 hours a day. At $21.00 over five days, that is at least $367.50 gross, or about $333.60 after federal taxes (see UPS vs FedEx package handler).
- A temporary hire with no guarantee has no floor. A week with no shifts pays $0.
- A four-week gap after your job ends costs $2,100 gross at 25 hours and $21.00. That is what you lose if you wait in January for a call that does not come.
Tax math: 7.65% for Social Security and Medicare (IRS Topic 751, updated September 24, 2026), and federal withholding for a single filer with a standard W-4, paid weekly (IRS Publication 15-T, 2026).
The permanent job may already be posted
Large employers are posting fewer "seasonal" jobs and more part-time ones. In a group of big employers, mostly retailers, the seasonal share of postings fell from 34% at the end of September 2025 to about 20% a year later. The part-time share rose from 38% to 49% (Indeed Hiring Lab, October 15, 2026).
So if you want to stay, you may not need to convert. Apply to a regular part-time role now, using part-time warehouse jobs and part-time retail jobs. Read the type and end date on each posting. At Amazon, listings show a "Duration" of Regular or Seasonal; see Amazon seasonal jobs. At UPS, a regular part-time job has different terms from a UPS seasonal job.
When to ask, and what to say
No employer publishes its rules, so these are questions to ask, not rules. The timing below is our advice.

| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| First two weeks | Tell your supervisor you would like to stay |
| Early December | Ask if any regular opening exists, on any shift |
| Two weeks before your end date | Ask for a clear answer and a date |
| If offered a job | Get the pay, shift, job type and start date in writing |
First two weeks. Say: "I'd like to stay after the season if a spot opens. Who decides that, and when should I ask again?"
Early December. Say: "My end date is (your date). Is there a regular opening on any shift? Do I need to apply again, or does my manager put me forward?"
If the answer is "we'll see." Say: "Thanks. When do you expect to know? I'll keep applying elsewhere until I have something in writing."
Only claim what is true. If you bring up your record, use your real numbers, such as "I have worked (your own number) of my (your own number) scheduled shifts." If you missed shifts, do not hide it or say you did not. Say what changed. A supervisor can check your record, and an honest answer costs you less than a false one.
If you are not kept on
- Check your final pay. Rules vary by state. In Texas, final pay is due within 6 calendar days if you were let go, or on the next regular payday if you quit (Texas Workforce Commission, read October 31, 2026). More: your final paycheck.
- Check unemployment benefits. You usually must have lost work through no fault of your own and earned enough during a base period. File in the state where you worked, as soon as you can (U.S. DOL, read October 31, 2026). A seasonal job ending does not settle the question either way, so ask your state agency. See unemployment benefits. This is information, not legal advice.
- Apply in December, not January. In January 2026, job searches on Indeed ran up to 31% above early December while postings stayed flat. Retail, driving and logistics support saw some of the steepest posting declines (Indeed Hiring Lab, February 19, 2026). Stores in five retail industries laid off 463,000 workers in January and February 2025 (BLS, November 17, 2025). See jobs hiring in January.
- Use the job on your next application. List the employer, dates, duties and equipment you really used. Help with this: resume with no experience.
- Track what you send in the application tracker.
When not to count on staying
Do not turn down a regular job with benefits to wait for a seasonal one to convert. Do not quit a second job on a verbal promise. Do not pick a seasonal job only for the chance to stay, unless the pay and hours work for you even if it ends on the end date. Compare what is open now: the seasonal jobs hub.

How to verify a listing
Every opening on JobPin links to its source posting. Open it and check whether it says seasonal, temporary or regular. Then confirm the pay and end date on the employer's own site. An offer to stay should come from the employer's own system or your manager, never from a stranger who asks for money or bank logins. How we check listings: how JobPin verifies listings.
