What pays what here

This covers Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos at all experience levels (BLS OEWS, May 2025), not any one employer's offer.

Scroll horizontally to view every column.

Occupation Jobs in metro 10th percentile Median here U.S. median
Hand laborers and material movers 13,900 $14.44 $18.53 $19.35
Stockers and order fillers 27,430 $14.47 $18.14 $17.95
Forklift and industrial truck operators 4,250 $16.95 $22.32 $22.32
Light truck drivers 6,380 $14.82 $22.03 $21.57
Heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers 10,760 $20.34 $27.46 $28.19
Retail salespersons 29,660 $12.20 $16.28 $17.03
Cashiers 20,490 $11.84 $16.32 $15.81
Customer service representatives 32,690 $14.67 $21.02 $21.53
Home health and personal care aides 12,490 $11.00 $13.64 $17.21
Nursing assistants 5,600 $17.18 $18.53 $20.32
Medical assistants 5,830 $17.89 $22.03 $21.97
Construction laborers 11,140 $16.31 $21.16 $22.66
Landscaping and groundskeeping workers 7,600 $15.03 $18.45 $18.82
Electricians 7,340 $18.87 $29.03 $30.38
HVAC mechanics and installers 3,140 $21.17 $29.24 $29.33

BLS published no Austin figure for helpers to electricians, so that row is missing. Austin cashiers ($16.32) beat the U.S. median ($15.81), and they earn more here than Austin retail salespersons ($16.28). And home care pays $13.64, well below the $17.21 national figure.

Register and phone work have real volume here: 20,490 cashier jobs and 32,690 customer service jobs. Other cities: pay benchmarks.

What that means weekly. A nursing assistant at the $18.53 median, working 40 hours, grosses $741.20. Take-home is about $637.48 after payroll taxes and federal withholding for a single filer (IRS Publication 15-T, 2026). Texas does not tax wages (Texas Comptroller, December 2025).

Local pay rules

Rule What applies in Austin Source
Minimum wage $7.25, no change on January 1, 2027 U.S. DOL, updated July 1, 2026; minimum wage by state
Tipped minimum $2.13 cash, tips must reach $7.25 U.S. DOL tipped table, read October 31, 2026
Payday Twice a month if overtime-eligible U.S. DOL table, revised January 1, 2023; pay frequency laws

JobPin found no city-wide Austin minimum for private jobs.

Local rights: an old city law to ask about

Fair Chance Hiring: on the books, but ask. The City of Austin's ordinance took effect April 4, 2016. Its fact sheet says employers with 15 or more workers cannot ask about your record until after a conditional offer. The city's Office of Civil Rights still lists it and takes complaints online. Its number is 512-972-3247 (read October 31, 2026). But HB 2127, a 2023 state law, voids city rules on hiring practices that go past state or federal law. JobPin could not confirm the city still enforces this one. Call before you rely on it. Texas has no statewide rule (ban the box laws).

Paid sick leave: not enforceable. Austin passed an earned sick time ordinance in February 2018. The Third Court of Appeals held on November 16, 2018 that it conflicts with the Texas Minimum Wage Act (No. 03-18-00445-CV). The Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) says Texas law requires no paid or unpaid leave from private employers (Guidebook, read October 31, 2026).

Fair workweek and breaks. Neither exists for private jobs here. HB 2127's status is before the Texas Supreme Court, where a petition was filed June 29, 2026 (appeals court docket, read October 31, 2026). Texas adults have no break rule on U.S. DOL's tables, though short breaks must be paid if given (break laws).

Who to call about pay. TWC's wage claim has a 180-day deadline, and the number is 800-832-9243. For overtime, call U.S. DOL at 1-866-487-9243. See unpaid wages.

Free local help

Workforce Solutions Capital Area serves Travis County from two career centers, Monday to Friday, 8 to 5. Walk-ins are accepted, but call first (board site, read October 31, 2026).

  • North: 9001 N IH 35, Suite 110, Austin 78753, 512-454-9675
  • East: 3401 Webberville Rd, Building 1000, at ACC Eastview, Austin 78702, 512-381-4200

The board says job seekers can "explore scholarships and training options for high-demand careers," if eligible, after a Career Info Session and a talk with a career navigator. It states no dollar cap. The catch is the order of steps: session first, money later, and only if you qualify. National rules and what to ask: free job help.

Getting there on CapMetro

The board approved two increases on September 28, 2026, the first system-wide rise since 2015 (CapMetro, read October 31, 2026).

Scroll horizontally to view every column.

Local fare Now From January 10, 2027 January 2029
Single ride $1.25 $1.50 $2.00
Day $2.50 $3.00 $4.00
Calendar month $41.25 $49.50 $66.00
Month, Reduced Fare $20.60 $24.75 $33.00

The commuter month (Express and Rail) goes from $96.25 to $110.00. At $18.53 an hour, $49.50 is 2.7 hours of work.

The low-income program is changing. Equifare costs $33.00 a month today and ends January 10, 2027. Enrolled riders move to Reduced Fare automatically, at half price. After that, Reduced Fare covers seniors, Medicare holders, veterans, riders with disabilities and households at or below 150% of the poverty level. Equifare's limit today is below 200%. CapMetro says no one enrolled loses a discount, and approvals last 24 months, so if your income falls between the limits, apply now. Forms: 1705 Guadalupe St. or 512-474-1200.

To the East center: CapMetro's Route 300 Springdale/Oltorf schedule lists ACC Eastview as a stop. For North, use the trip planner, since JobPin could not confirm a route on CapMetro's pages.
